Introduction

Cardiovascular research has been a major strength of the Leicester Medical School since its inception. Its sustained excellence has been recognised by being specifically flagged in all the Research Assessment Exercises and in the 2001 RAE, cardiovascular research at Leicester received a 5 rating. Leicester is one of the few centres in the country where there is an excellent combination of basic and clinical research in the cardiovascular field.

The Department of Cardiovascular Sciences is the largest Department in the Medical School. There are over 160 members of staff, including 46 academic staff.

Officers of the Department are :

Head of Department: Professor NJ Samani BSc MD FRCP FACC FMedSci

Deputy Head of Department: Dr RI Norman BSc PhD MIBiol CBiol FHEA

Departmental Manager: Mr Manish Maisuria

The Department is managed by an Executive Committee. Cardiovascular research is coordinated by a Cardiovascular Management Board. An Academic Committee (Chair: Professor AH Goodall PhD) is responsible for academic matters. The Department has laboratories and clinical facilities at the Glenfield General Hospital, Leicester Royal Infirmary and the Leicester General Hospital. Janet Harris is Technical Service Manager for groups on the Royal Infirmary site and Peter Liepins for the Glenfield and General Hospital sites

The Department undertakes research ranging from molecular and cellular work, through translational research into clinical studies and has an international reputation in several areas. These include (i) Molecular genetics of cardiovascular diseases; (ii) Hypertension (iii) Coronary artery disease (iv) Heart failure (v) Stroke (vi) clinical and basic electrophysiology (vii) Peripheral vascular disease (viii) Myocardial protection and regeneration (ix) Cardiac imaging (x) Thrombosis and haemostasis. The Department has a BHF Chair in Cardiology.

Research is carried out through the following research groupings: Ageing and Stroke Medicine, Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology, Medical Physics, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Vascular Medicine and Vascular Surgery.

The Department is also home to the Emergency Medicine and Ophthalmology groups.
