Head of Group: Professor M GaliƱanes Academic Member: Mr L Hadjinikolaou The activities of the group encompass clinical and laboratory-based research and are centred on the following principal areas: Understanding the pathophysiology of the injury sustained during ischaemia and reoxygenation; the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in the injury sustained during cardio-pulmonary bypass and in the progression of heart diseases to heart failure; the pathways controlling the elastic properties of blood vessels and their possible role in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis; the use of bone marrow-derived stem cells in regeneration of damaged myocardium.
