Head of Group: Professor B Williams Academic members: Professor H Thurston, Professor MJ Davies, Dr RI Norman, Dr K Herbert, Dr D Lodwick. The Vascular Medicine group integrates laboratory and clinical research. Laboratory research focuses on two areas: (i) How traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes promote mechanisms of human vascular cell injury and ageing, with particular emphasis on damage to the telomeric region of the chromosome and damage to mitochondrial DNA, (ii) the structure, function and regulation of ATP-sensitive potassium channels and L-type calcium channels. Clinical research includes: (i) Physiological studies of vascular structure and function in patients with vascular disease, hypertension or diabetes, (ii) clinical trials in cardiovascular medicine, (iii) development of e-medicine technologies for use in clinical study programmes and possible future use in clinical practice.
