Reproductive Sciences

The Reproductive Sciences Section was established in 2003 as part of the Department of Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine in the Leicester Medical School. The majority of members of the Section came from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, which had been established as one of the first four Departments of the newly established Leicester Medical School in 1974. It is led by Professor David J. Taylor (Obstetrics & Gynecology) and Professor Stephen C. Bell (Reproductive Sciences).

The Reproductive Sciences research programme has grown extensively in Leicester during the past decade and was described as an “area of excellence” in the 2001 RAE.

The mission statement of its research is:
“the characterisation of the cellular and molecular basis of, and
trials of new preventative and therapeutic strategies in
gestational and reproductive disease”.

Its academic and honorary academic staff lead the following research groupings whose research is focused upon major obstetrical and gynaecological conditions:

Preterm Birth Research Group
• Fetal Growth and Development Research Group
•  Prolapse and Incontinence Research Group
• Gynaecology Endocrinology Research Group

and the following mechanism-based research groups

• Endocannabinoid Research Group

In addition to its commitment to prosecuting internationally competitive research and clinical trials, the members of the Section through the Clinical Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, provides excellence in teaching and learning for undergraduates and postgraduates. It contributes to the M.B. Ch.B. undergraduate programme and the M.Sc. Course in Toxicology and Molecular Pathology.

The Section offers medical undergraduates the opportunity to study by research for the Degrees of B.Sc. (intercalated), and graduates to pursue research for M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. Staff also provide national Postgraduate Courses for the professional examinations of DRCOG and MRCOG Part II.
