The Department has a considerable range of expertise and research interests and was awarded a 5A rating in the 2001 RAE, and was A rated for postgraduate training by the MRC. The main groupings in the Department encompass G Protein Coupled Receptors, Cell Signalling, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular Science and Ion Channels/Membrane Transport. The approaches extend from 'the molecule to the system' and include studies on the properties and signalling of native and recombinant receptors and ion channels, second messenger assays, yeast two hybrid analysis, transgenic mice, calcium imaging, confocal microscopy, capacitance measurements of neurotransmitter release, and patch clamp recordings from nerve terminals in brain slices. The scientific environment in the Department provides a continuum of both ideas and approaches (combining traditional and molecular techniques) across a range of topics to give an excellent opportunity for postgraduate study in molecular physiology and pharmacology. For further information and informal enquiries please contact the project supervisor directly, or the postgraduate tutor:

The major component of the M.Res. course is the laboratory project, which is chosen by the student from the list of projects available. There is also a small taught element to the course, which will include Training in Transferable and Generic Research Skills and Taught modules from existing courses which are relevant to the chosen laboratory project. The student will also be expected to attend a series of research seminars. This Masters programme is useful if you are considering a career in research, either in academia or the commercial world. Given the excellence of the research training that an MRes offers, you may have an opportunity to progress to a two year "fast track” Ph.D. programme. Full details of the scheme are available here.
