Postgraduate Degrees by Research

 (Ph.D., M. Phil., M.Sc. by research)

The Department of Biology provides a stimulating and exciting environment in which to undertake a postgraduate research degree. The Department is committed to providing postgraduate training of the highest possible quality and research projects may be offered in a range of research areas.  The Department has excellent facilities for research and many of the Department’s laboratories and specialist research facilities have been recently refurbished.  The Department is training, or has recently trained, postgraduates from the UK, EEC, and a number of other countries including Brazil, Canada, Kenya, Mauritius, Korea, Libya, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.

All postgraduates benefit from membership of the Faculty Graduate School which oversees the organisation and delivery of an individually tailored formal training programme agreed for all students at the outset of their course.  This training programme aims to develop mature researchers who have acquired a wide range of transferable skills, including IT and presentation skills, budgetary control of research projects and protection of intellectual property. Additionally, membership of the large and internationally successful research community of the Faculty of Medicine and Biological Sciences fosters and facilitates interdisciplinary interactions. The Department runs a weekly seminar series that includes presentations by departmental researchers and external speakers. To develop their presentation skills all postgraduates participate in this series and present annual seminars.

The Department has a number of research studentships every year with funding provided from a range of sources, including BBSRC, NERC, The Environment Agency, industry, charitable trusts, E.U. and overseas governments. Currently available studentships are advertised nationally and information on possible sources of finance for both home and international students is available from the University Graduate School.

For acceptance on a PhD course candidates will require a 1st or 2:1 honours degree, or M.Sc. degree in an appropriate subject area. Applications from well-qualified students from overseas are particularly encouraged.

Application Procedure

For a specific, currently available studentship the procedures specified for it in the relevant advertisement should be followed.

Informal preliminary enquires on the possibility of Postgraduate Degrees by Research at Leicester  will be  welcomed by the Postgraduate tutor and also by individual potential supervisors.  Enquiries may be made by e-mail, letter or initially by telephone. To aid discussions, potential supervisors/project areas should be identified, and a full C.V. (including the names and addresses of two academic referees) should be provided.   Subject to identification of appropriate supervisor, project and source of finance, formal application may then be pursued.
