Centre for Advanced Electronically Controlled Drives

INTRODUCTION

This centre and these projects have mostly moved to the Company Technelec Ltd,[Globe Graphic] that was set up
by Professor Pollock to exploit this technology

Who are we?

The Centre for Advanced Electronically Controlled Drives is part of the Electrical and Electronic Power Engineering Research Group in the Engineering Department at the University of Leicester. We specialize in innovative power electronic solutions for power supplies and motor drives. Our work on switched reluctance drives and more recently on flux switching motors has an international reputation.  The Group is led by Professor Charles Pollock.

What do we do?

Switched Reluctance Drives

High efficiency switched reluctance drives with short flux loops

Low Cost single and two phase switched reluctance drives

A novel electronically controlled propulsion motor

Analysis and reduction of acoustic noise in the switched reluctance motor

Automated design, analysis and simulation software

Dual Voltage Switched Reluctance Drives

Click here for a Tutorial on Switched Reluctance Drives.

Flux Switching Motors and Drives (a new motor with the simple construction of the switched reluctance motor but with a lower cost power electronic controller)

Design and simulation of the flux switching motor

Development of the flux switching motor and drive for low cost, high volume applications

Flux switching motors with low acoustic noise for variable speed fans and pumps

Permanent Magnet Hybrid Stepping motor Drives

Three dimensional finite element analysis

Four Quadrant stepping motor drives with unity power factor

Closed loop commutation without position sensors

Induction motor drives

Removal of 50 Hz hum from single and two phase induction motor drives

Low cost soft start and voltage controller for three phase induction motor drives

Brushless dc motors and drives

Design of brushless dc motors for light electric traction

Electronic cancellation of acoustic noise in brushless dc drives

Power Electronics

Laser Power supplies

Welding power supplies with resonant switching techniques

Flexible AC Transmission Systems – Series Voltage Compensation

Design of integrated capacitors and inductors

See also the Research Topics Page for extra details on the above

Centre for Advanced Electronically Controlled Drives.

The Centre for Advanced Electronically Controlled Drives is a permanent mechanism for the collaboration of industry and the University Research Group for fundamental and applied research in electronically controlled drives.
